En los últimos tres años, Carnival Corporation y su Centro de Cruceros Mahogany Bay, han liderado el número de visitas de cruceros que atracan en Roatán, siendo huésped a más de 500,000 pasajeros cada año.  La inauguración oficial de Mahogany Bay tuvo lugar el 10 de febrero de 2010.  Este proyecto de $62 millones de dólares abrió oportunidades y múltiples trabajos para los isleños y a sí mismo, generó una mayor conciencia de Roatán al mundo. Mahogany Bay ha hecho una inversión significativa en entrenamiento para todos sus empleados, proveyendo programas educativos orientados a la hospitalidad y el servicio al cliente.  También ha participado activamente en servicios comunitarios como la Iniciativa de la Limpieza Costera.  Estas y otras prácticas lo han colocado en una categoría superior en términos de responsabilidad social empresarial. Mahogany Bay comenzó a principios de este año una misión para corregir y mejorar sus instalaciones y servicios utilizando los mejores productos y servicios disponibles en la isla, ofreciéndoles a sus visitantes una mejor y más segura experiencia turística.  Para esta importante tarea, el puerto ha hecho mejoras en todos sus aspectos operacionales tales como generación de electricidad, potabilización de agua, tratamiento de aguas negras, manejo de sólidos, composteado de desperdicios orgánicos y la supervisión de alimentos y bebidas, solo por nombrar algunas. Dentro del grupo selecto de proveedores de servicio, Mahogany Bay contrató los servicios de ACME Environmental Solutions para que pudiera diseñar e implementar una serie de mejoras prácticas y sostenibles para sus sistemas de agua y saneamiento que pudiesen integrar los altos estándares impuestos por Carnival Corporation. Los servicios suministrados actualmente incluyen la instalación de equipo profesional para mejorar su infraestructura existente, al igual que proveer personal calificado para el diagnóstico, manejo y el mantenimiento diario de estos sistemas para hacerlos completamente operacionales a largo plazo. Muchas mejoras fueron hechas para asegurar que toda el agua que se provee en cada llave sea 100% potable y segura para su uso.  El almacenamiento de aguas lluvias aumento significativamente, las cisternas fueron mejoradas para incluir cloradores automáticos y bombas de recirculación, se instalaron nuevos filtros de agua y equipo de desinfección ultravioleta, incluso hasta el agua embotellada y hielo en bolsa están siendo monitoreados diariamente para garantizar su pureza. Las mejoras también siguieron en los sistemas de recolección de aguas negras y las plantas de tratamiento. Nuevos sistemas de irrigación se instalaron para reusar el agua tratada en los jardines. Un programa comprensivo está siendo implementado para separar los plásticos y latas de aluminio en los basureros asegurando su manejo adecuado.  Todas estas y muchas otras actividades son una prueba solida de que Carnival Corporation, Mahogany Bay y ACME Environmental Solutions están completamente comprometidos al mejoramiento del medio ambiente así como la salud y seguridad de los turistas que visitan este puerto.  También son una clara prueba de que en la isla existe el talento y la capacidad para un continuo crecimiento de la industria turística de forma responsable, mientras se mantiene a Roatán en el mapa como un destino de excelencia.  Seguiremos ampliando el tema con una serie de artículos de las diversas actividades realizadas por ACME en Mahogany Bay.  Nos vemos pronto! 

Carnival Corporation’s Mahogany Bay Cruise Center has led the island of Roatan in the number of cruise ship visits for the last 3 years, hosting more than 500,000 passengers each year.  The official inauguration of Mahogany Bay took place on February 10, 2010 when the 62 million dollar project opened up jobs for islanders as well as providing a broader awareness of Roatan to the world. Mahogany Bay has made significant investments in training for their employees, providing educational programs to staff members on hospitality and customer services, as well as actively participating in community services such as the Coastal Clean Up initiative.  These and many other practices have definitely placed them in a different category in terms of their social responsibility. With regards to their visitors, Mahogany Bay began early this year a quest to review and improve their facilities and services using the best products and services available on the island that would allow them to offer the safest and most pleasant tourist experience on the island.  For this important task, Mahogany Bay made serious improvements in all of its operational aspects such as power generation, potable water, sewage, solid waste handling, composting of yard waste, and food and beverage safety, just to name a few. Amongst other top-notch service providers, Mahogany Bay hired the services of ACME Environmental Solutions to design and implement a series of practical and sustainable improvements for their water and sanitation systems that could integrate practicality with the high standards set by Carnival Corporation. The improvements include the installation of professional equipment to upgrade their existing infrastructure, as well as provide qualified personnel to diagnose, manage and maintain those systems on a daily basis to make them fully operational over the long run.  Improvements ensured that all of the water provided at each and every tap on the facility is 100% potable and safe to use.  The rain harvesting storage capacity was significantly increased and the water cisterns were upgraded to include automatic chlorine injection and recirculation.  Next, new water filtration and ultra-violet disinfection equipment was installed.  All of the water distribution plumbing is continuously disinfected and flushed, but the customer care doesn’t stop there.  Even bottled water and bagged ice used on the facility are closely monitored to guarantee their purity. Upgrades were done on the sewage collection systems and the sewage treatment plants. New irrigation fields were installed to reuse the treated waters for landscaping. A comprehensive program is being implemented to separate plastics and aluminum cans at the trash bins for their proper segregation and handling. All of these and many other activities are a solid proof that Carnival Corporation, Mahogany Bay and ACME Environmental Solutions are totally committed to the welfare of the environment as well as the health and safety of the tourists that visit the cruise ship port, but it’s also proof that the island has the talent and capability to continue to grow the tourism industry in a responsible and sustainable manner, keeping Roatan on the world map as a prime destination.  We will continue a series of articles describing these activities in coming editions.
